A few months back, I had the pleasure of meeting Stone Free. I was watching local bands at (Roger Reis's) Lot 4 Peace Fest when a couple of dudes sat down nearby and struck up a conversation. They told me that they would be performing later on in the evening. I was truly amazed when I saw them play. Their performance was a dynamic blend of original song-writing skill and incredible musicianship with musical elements drawn from the rock and soul music of the 60s and 70s. The band calls it 'Hendrixian Electric Soul'. It's obvious that they love what they are doing and had the audience jumping out of their chairs and dancing.
The band's classic-rock rooted creations are crafted inside their self-owned recording facility, Stone Free Studios. Located in Chicago, the studio blends 'old school' analog tape and tube amplification with modern Pro-Tools engineering magic.
The band consists of Larry McDaniels (guitar, vocals), Roger Jones (bass, vocals), and Rick Cruz (drums, vocals, studio production). Larry and Rick are currently producing the next album.
With no formal instruction, Larry began singing and writing songs at the age of six. At 14, he was introduced to the bass and later taught himself to play guitar. He has started many bands over the years and believes that Chicago is the center of untapped musical talent. Larry is the frontman for Stone Free and his guitar playing and original compositions are the band's driving force.
Roger, an accomplished solo jazz guitarist, started out playing the music of Elvis, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Grand Funk Railroad. He recently switched to playing bass guitar so that he could be a part of Stone Free.
Rick Cruz is a drummer, guitar player, audio engineer, music producer, and amplifier designer. He also owns Cruz Amplification where he designs and builds all tube, hand-wired guitar and bass amplifiers. His hand-crafted amps are being used by John Fogerty, Cheap Trick, Jim Peterik and The Ides of March, and George Clinton and the P Funk All-Stars.
