Box Office Battlefield (2/5/10)

CD & Film - Film Reviews

alt

Avatar is still crushing records and leading the box office. Who are the contenders to take down the mighty giant this weekend of February 5, 2010? Well we’ll see if the three new films this weekend that come out are worth your money and I’ll tell you if it’s worth your time.

Dear John Dear John

(Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Richard Jenkins) A romantic drama about a soldier (Tatum) who falls for a co-ed (Seyfried) while he’s home on leave. Their relationship is tested in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, an event that causes him to re-enlist for service.

My Take: I think Nicholas Sparks is hanging on a thin wire with his works post “The Notebook.” It looks sort of cute and I’m sure all you girls will drag your boyfriends to this love gush film, but I warn you, that if you’re hoping for another “Notebook” like story, it isn’t there. It feels like it is lacking something and not as good as it should be. Plus with rewrites and reshoots a month before the film’s release doesn’t make it sound like they had a solid plan coming into it. Rent It

From Paris with LoveFrom Paris With Love

(John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers) In Paris, a young employee in the office of the US Ambassador (Myers) hooks up with an American spy (Travolta) looking to stop a terrorist attack in the city.

My Take: Yet another film coming out two weekends in a row with a struggling classic star that is trying to make a come back, John Travolta. I mean when you have the actor quote a line from one of their best films, that’s just pushing it. The film does look like it could be fun, but doesn’t have a complete cohesive thought of structure. If you want an in your face, things blowing up, action flick with one liners, then you got yourself a flick to watch. But it looks like not a bad way to waste your time. It will be at least watchable, but viewers beware. Rent It

Frozen Frozen

(Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell, Kevin Zegers) Three snowboarders become stranded on a chairlift at a ski resort. Realizing it’ll be a week before the resort opens again, they are forced to make a series of life-or-death decisions.

My Take: This is supposedly will do to skiing what Jaws did to swimming in the ocean. It looks kind of thrilling, but this low budget horror can only go so far. It was praised somewhere in the middle at Sundance when it premiered a week ago. You’ll either like it or hate it, but luckily for you it’s only limited in it’s screenings, so you’ll have to go out of your way to see it if you want, which most likely you’ll like it. Rent it or See It

On a side note!! Crazy Heart releases everywhere this weekend, so you might want to check it out with all the Academy Award buzz circling around it with Jeff Bridges.
