Swim on over for great service and tasty eats!
So, we must admit that we dedicate one or two nights a month frequenting hotel lobby bars and restaurants; it gives us that vacation feel without the sleepless hotel room nights. Tonight we chose the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place which recently went through a major aesthetic overhaul on its new main restaurant, Shor, M/X, a sexy cocktail lounge, and Forno which dedicates itself traditional Italian café fare. Our night at Shor began with an introduction into the lobby by the doorman who seemed to have known us for years. Given that we are hotel bar and restaurant whores, we were sure he knew us from a previous night of hotel hopping debauchery but nope, we were once again running like a couple of scarlet women. Upon being seated, we were greeted by George, a crafty serving veteran with an impressive resume and skilled charm. The dining room was nicely adorned with espresso wood finishings and warm colors unlike other hotels establishments which will go unnamed. We must mention before moving on that Shor’s name is derived from their continued efforts to purchase inventory from local artisans.
We started our evening with not only one, but two bottles of wine. Yes, a bit overzealous but as my dad once said, “life is no dress rehearsal”. So we lived it up! Wine number one was a scrumptious Chardonnay and the other, a prodigious Amarone that went down like “budda”. For starters we began our night with the chef’s selection of a seafood medley which included crab legs, shrimp, lump crab cakes all accompanied by marinated crispy duck which I am confident even the Aflac duck would be salivating over.
On to dinner we went. We went with the recommended plates of whitefish and chicken vesuvio. The whitefish was as big as our head, but better than any burrito we ever had and the vesuvio made us feel as if we stepped into the 1930’s in Chicago where it was suggested chicken vesuvio was founded. The plates were overflowing with food and flavor.
So, after a “bottle of white, a bottle of red”, I ordered my uptown girl a Shor’s signature white flowering tea that flowered with taste and style. We then ended our evening with the dessert menu in hand which touted a list of parlor classic sundaes with flavors like, mint julep, pina colada, banana’s foster, and cherries jubilee. We went with the cherries jubilee which was turned out to be a palatial celebration!
Finally, we went for a tour of the 6,000 sq. foot revamped giant and found the bar to be busy and smartly decorated accompanied by a terrific drink list. Moreover, the staff at the Hyatt longed for our dining experience to be perfect. We strongly suggest that if you are looking for a mini Chicago getaway that Shor is where you drop anchor.
But before we close, as you know, Nikki and I must provide our washroom review as well (because every date must have a good can). That being said, we used the hotel potty which flushes out at a two spot. It was certainly clean but it was your typical hotel lavatory.
