City Limits in Schaumburg was shaken up pretty hard last Saturday night in what their manager, Sandy, described as “the loudest show in their history”. With bands like Echoes of Ruin and Hesher in Buzz Magazine's Metal Wars 2 lineup, that was really no surprise. Six bands rocked the stage while the fans supported each act by screaming and waving for their favorites. Judging the contest finals were representatives from Dark Star Records, Jeff Swan and Lloyd Freeze, and Wuli Records’, Louis Svitek, formerly of Ministry, Pigface, M.O.D. and The Revolting Cocks.
The night started off like an explosion when Seven Day Sonnet took the stage. The band, which recently won the Triton College Battle of the Bands for the second year in a row, was extremely tight and probably a bit more melodic than the rest of the finalists. Displaying great stage presence, Seven Day Sonnet instantly impressed the judging panel in which one described them as “an exciting up and coming band with all the right components to watch out for in the future”. The fact that they didn’t place may have surprised some, which should give one an idea of the caliber of bands that were competing.

Unwritten Truth went on next and brought with them an entirely different taste of metal altogether. Consisting of crunching power and growling screams they had strong support from the crowd from the moment they struck their first chord in which their intensity did not let up throughout their entire set. This make an impact on the judges enough to land them a third place finish.
The third band of the night was a metal power trio called Hesher. Providing more of a biker-influenced metal, the band was quite a departure from the first two. Hesher was actually defunct at the time they entered the contest in which they quickly re-banded once they discovered the online voting had put them into the final round where they would need to play live.

Echoes of Ruin then came out and quickly took control of the crowd with a striking display of energy, precision and thunderous grooves. Echoes of Ruin’s singer, Sal, gave a very strong performance and the entire band showed their ability to keep the crowd involved. Metal Wars 2 marked the first ever live performance with Sal as their singer, who had moved from behind the drum kit to take on the band’s vocal needs. Before the change took place Echoes of Ruin was strictly an instrumental band. Their new lineup did the trick, earning them a strong second place finish.
And speaking of instrumental bands, Lost In Blue was the next band up. Many confided that entering the contest without a singer or frontman would certainly put the band at a disadvantage from the start, but that was not the case whatsoever. Proving a few skeptics wrong, Lost In Blue hastily grabbed the attention of the entire venue with its polished blend of progressive metal. Zach’s drumming alone won many over who had never before seen the band. While the guitar harmonies and sizzling leads of Ron and Keith and Ryan’s spot on bass playing showed everyone why Lost In Blue does not need a singer, Zach continued to electrify the venue with his intricate beat patterns and double bass prowess. Ryan, who was very animated and found himself playing in the crowd on a few occasions, adequately filled the presence of a frontman. Needless to say, the judges were truly blown away by the band, in which each gave them the highest scoring mark, making Lost In Blue the Metal Wars 2 champions.

The final band, Totem, drove in from Columbus, Ohio to play the top spot they earned by gathering the most votes from the online voting. Unfortunately, they had a very tough act to follow. Still, Totem, played a solid set, racking up some new fans from the Chicagoland area. The only band with a keyboard and armed with a singer in the mold of a more classic metal vein, they provided a much different sound than the rest.
Each band was inspiring in their own right. Win or not, all bands showed why they were deserving of playing in the finals.

Congratulations again to Lost In Blue for taking the Buzz Magazine Metal Wars 2 championship. Lost In Blue will now go on to play with Black Label Society and Dope at Powerfest 2009 on May 8th at the Pearl Room in Mokena. Buzz Magazine would also like to thank our sponsors Dark Star Records, Wuli Records and Sonic Palace Recording studio for their support. Winners Lost in Blue will now enter the Wuli Records studio for a weekend block of recording with Louis Svitek while second place Echoes of Ruin will work with Matt Mercado at Sonic Palace Recording.
We’d like to thank all the great bands that participated in Buzz Magazine’s Metal Wars 2 and wish them the best of luck in their upcoming endeavors.
