Oh how they hate when I talk about wrestling? Who's they? The establishment. The man. Big brother. The people in charge of this news site. Ok, that ay or may not be true but pro wrestling isnt the most popular of subjects at Buzznews. Wrestling really isnt a popular subject in general...you really arent gonna pick up many girls in bars talking about John Cena. Then again, that was then and this is now.
And as of now pro wrestler and hometown boy Phil Brooks has the wrestling world by its ear. The Wicker park native (and frequent Wrigley Field visitor) known as CM Punk to the wrestling world is about to leave the WWE, but not without leaving his mark. Punk is scheduled to take on WWE World Chapion John Cena this Sunday at the Money in the Bank pay per view. Punk will have an distinct advantage as the ppv is being held at the All-State Arena in Rosemont, IL, which generally features a notoriously anti-Cena crowd.
While always being recognized as one of the best workers and performers in the sport, it wasnt until word spread of Punk's contract situation did he become wrestling's hottest villian. When word spread that Punk was thinking of not re-newing his contract, most figured it was just a matter of time before the WWE offerred Brooks enough cash to sign. Then again this is CM Punk we're talking about. The straight-edge superstar doesn't exactly beat to the drum of others. With the gossip sheets already talking and the wrestling "marks" already hitting twitter, Punk and the WWE writers went to work on one their best storylines yet.
On arecent episode of Monday Night Raw Punk found himself with a live microphone, an expiring contract, a WWE title match, and free reign to say whatever he wanted...and that's just what he did, cutting oneof the most talked about promo's in wrestling history. Cena and Punk have went on to cut ore memorable promo's selling the ppv, breaking the kayfabe 4th wall...an unheard of thing in pro wrestling. Punk has been so great lately that his actions have caught the attention of many mainstream news sites and blogs. Yes pro wrestling is fake, but what Punk is saying is real....and that has turned him into wrestlings most popular and most hated star.
So the question becoes whats real and whats not. The storyline is genius since itsbuilt in realism, and smart wrestling fans have gone with the theory of Punk and the WWE coming to some sort of agreement as there's no way in hell WWE CEO Vince McMahon would give Punk this big of a push right before he leaves the company. Thats just not how McMahon works. Wether Punk wins the title Sunday or loses and takes time off, there's no way Vince lets him leave the company for good...not while he's this hot. You can count on Punk being buried big time if he were truly leaving.
JForer WWE superstar Jeff Hardy was as hot as ever when his contract came to an end not to long ago. And when he wanted to leave he et his demise, painfully and cleanly ...ironically at the hands of Punk. The name Jeff Hardy hasn't been mentioned on WWE tv ever since he fell off that ladder.
Speaking of ladders, the ppv itself isnt bad, as the Money in the Bank matches have always been exciting. Ladder matches generally dont suck....usually. And Chicago wrestling crowds are considered the best in the business, especially when it comes to televised events. Add Punk and John Cena to the mix and things turn epic.
Cena's everything the Chicago wrestling fan hates yet respects....so as long as he's considered a "good guy" Cena will continuously be boo'ed out the building anytime he comes to Chicago. Look no further than Wrestlemania 21 when Cena main-evented in a atch against ultimate bad guy Triple H. Even against wrestling's most hated villian at the time the Chicago fans cheered Triple H and boo'ed Cena at every occassion.
Where was Punk at the time of Wrestlemania 21? Still wrestling on the indy scene, Punk was a costumed extra in Cena's over the top entrance. Hometown boy Punk just may get a Wrestleania-like reception like no other...especially if he does indeed win the title.
Either way, win, lose, leave, stay, cheer or boo...it's going to be an epic night for hometown boy, Phil Brooks.
