Lookingglass Theatre Company, in keeping with its celebrated tradition of bringing to life Ensemble-created new work, presents the world premiere of White Rooster, written and directed by Ensemble Member Matthew C. Yee (Lucy & Charlie's Honeymoon). Drawing from a personal family story rooted in early 1900s China, Yee's inventive and haunting play with music reimagines an American ghost town in a way only Lookingglass can, weaving together puppetry, movement, song, and folklore. Single tickets to the production, which runs March 5 – April 12, 2026, start at $33 and are available for purchase at www.lookingglasstheatre.org or by phone at 312.337.0665. Formal invitations to follow.

White Rooster is a darkly funny tale of love, loss and the strange things we inherit. After a family tragedy, Min is pulled into a world of restless spirits, old curses and mysterious traditions. Her fiancé won't stay dead, her sister won't stay buried and a rooster won't be ignored. Blending spooky folklore with offbeat humor, White Rooster is a haunting tale of grief, family and the messiness of moving on.

"I started writing White Rooster after hearing an old family story that I had never known about my Great Grandfather, who was an orphan, being adopted as the "son" of two deceased children who were bonded together via a ghost marriage," comments Matthew C. Yee. "This discovery lead me down a rabbit hole filled with weird traditions, spooky folk tales, terrifying deities and unintentionally hilarious demons. I decided to set White Rooster in a fictional American ghost town, specifically one that was originally founded by long-gone Chinese gold miners. What if the people that were left behind were not only influence by the physical world created by those Chinese immigrants, but also the spiritual world?"

"Matt always finds fascinating roots upon which to build incredible stories. He writes deep and tragic narratives that radiate his unique sense of humor," comments Artistic Director Kasey Foster. "The theatrical elements of puppetry and movement, conventions as old as Lookingglass and beyond, are somehow terribly new under Matt's direction. I have swooned at every part of the White Rooster development process. This new and original work is inventive, collaborative, and transformative. Nothing has ever felt more Lookingglass."

World renowned ambassadors of Dance and Culture, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to its Chicago home – The Auditorium, Chicago's Landmark stage at 50 E. Ida B. Wells Drive – with four dynamic performances debuting six new works, April 24-26, 2026.  Marking its 57th Chicago engagement at The Auditorium, the company will perform two distinct programs, each featuring Chicago premieres and a finale of the must-see Alvin Ailey masterpiece Revelations. Tickets start at $46 and are now available at auditoriumtheatre.org, by calling 312.341.2300, or at the Box Office at 50 E Ida B Wells Drive in Chicago.

In 1958, Alvin Ailey and a small group of dancers took the stage in New York and forever changed American dance and culture. One of the country's groundbreaking greats, Ailey's company earned a reputation as one of the finest international ambassadors of American culture, promoting the uniqueness of the African American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of American modern dance in a universal celebration of the human spirit.

The curtain has risen on AILEY's next era under the leadership of new Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack, the renowned dancer and educator, guided as ever by Alvin Ailey's pioneering legacy. Ms. Graf Mack was introduced to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater under the direction of Judith Jamison and became widely celebrated for her dance artistry. The Company's 32 extraordinary dancers, renowned for their unrivaled artistry, technique, and spirit, include five from the Windy City area: Solomon Dumas (Chicago); Isaiah Day (Chicago); Donnie Duncan Jr. (Carrier Mills, IL);  Renaldo Maurice (Gary, IN); and Sarah Daley-Perdomo (South Elgin, IL). The two dynamic programs include the Chicago debuts of world premieres from the recent season launch at New York City Center by frequent AILEY collaborator Jamar Roberts, along with contemporary choreographers Maija GarcíaFredrick Earl MosleyMatthew Neenan; a new production by the late Judith Jamison, former AILEY Artistic Director; and a company premiere by Medhi Walerski.

"The Auditorium welcomes Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to our landmark stage each year with tremendous pride, privilege and gratitude.  This April, to conclude our 2025-26 Celebrating Women Leaders in Dance season, we look forward to showcasing AILEY under the company's new Artistic Director, Alicia Graf Mack.  With two different programs over four performances comes the opportunity for our guests to experience works by many of the most important choreographers in the world of dance today.  This weekend is certain to be a special addition to Chicago's Spring arts season!" said The Auditorium CEO Rich Regan

"This monumental season draws deeply on Alvin Ailey's legacy rooted in celebrating the resilience of the human spirit, while extending its truth and bold virtuosity to reflect this moment in time and our hopes for the future. It is an honor to be a caretaker of this ever-changing continuum of inspiration, which is a living testament to the vitality of the tradition Mr. Ailey gave us and the gifts of spirit that Judith Jamison so lovingly nurtured. Along with Matthew Rushing and the company of brilliant dancers whose artistry moves us all, I am proud and excited to be taking our next steps forward on The Auditorium stage, where I and generations of company members have cherished sharing Alvin Ailey's gift to the world with Chicago audiences." said AILEY Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack.

The programs for the 2026 Chicago engagement of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater are as follows:

FRIDAY, APRIL 24, AT 7:30 P.M. & SATURDAY, APRIL 25, AT 7:30 P.M.

Blink of an Eye (2025) In an intriguing piece that probes the relationship between dance and music, choreographer Medhi Walerski lays bare the strength and vulnerability inherent in the creative process. The timeless beauty of J.S. Bach's violin sonatas and partita anchors the athletic movement that is both precise and expansive.

A Case of You (2005) A new production of this sensual duet—an excerpt from Judith Jamison's 2005 Reminiscin'—is an emotionally intense showstopper danced to Diana Krall's sultry rendition of the classic Joni Mitchell song.

Embrace (2025) Choreographer Fredrick Earl Mosley examines the ups and downs of human connections—messy, beautiful, and everything in between. Set to popular songs by Stevie Wonder, Kate Bush, Ed Sheeran, Des'ree, and Pink, this piece explores what it takes to love deeply, heal fully, and embrace the journey with open arms.

Revelations (1960) Performed to African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs, and holy blues, Alvin Ailey's Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans.

SATURDAY, APRIL 25, AT 1:00 P.M. & SUNDAY, APRIL 26, AT 3:00 P.M.

Jazz Island (2025) In Maija García's first work for AILEY, a Caribbean folktale comes to life through ancestral rhythms and divine intervention. Inspired by Geoffrey Holder's "Black Gods, Green Islands" and featuring an original score by Etienne Charles, this theatrical staging explores the spiritual dimensions of human drama and the connective force of love across the Afro-Caribbean diaspora.  Adapted from Black Gods, Green Islands by Geoffrey Holder. Created in collaboration with the artists of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Difference Between (2025) Matthew Neenan's choreographic debut with AILEY features his signature wild abandon and gestural playfulness. Acclaimed singer and composer Heather Christian (a 2025 MacArthur Foundation Fellow) contributes her raw power to an intricate world of strange tensions, potent griefs, and quiet loves.

Song of the Anchorite (2025) Renowned Ailey choreographer Jamar Roberts gives a fresh take on the 1961 solo Hermit Songs, Alvin Ailey's reaction to a set of medieval religious texts and the haunting song cycle by Samuel Barber that they inspired. The result is a powerful meditation on passion and devotion—both earthly and spiritual—danced to jazz trumpeter Avishai Cohen's interpretation of a Ravel adagio.

Revelations

In addition to these four public performances, the Company will present two student matinees at The Auditorium, reaching thousands of youths with an inspiring excerpt of Ronald K. Brown's Grace – a fervent tour-de-force depicting individuals on a journey to the promised land – on Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24, at 11 a.m.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE AND TICKETS

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performs at The Auditorium Friday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 25, at 1 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. Tickets start at $46 and are now  available at auditoriumtheatre.org/events, by calling 312.341.2300, or at the Box Office at 50 E Ida B Wells Drive in Chicago, IL.

About Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, recognized by US Congressional resolution as a vital American "Cultural Ambassador to the World," grew from a now-fabled March 1958 performance in New York that changed forever the perception of American dance. Forged during a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement, the company was established to uplift the African American experience while transcending boundaries of race, faith, and nationality with its universal humanity. Before his untimely death in 1989, Mr. Ailey named Judith Jamison as his successor, and for 21 years she brought the company to unprecedented success. Alicia Graf Mack, widely celebrated for her dance artistry during her years with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, was appointed Artistic Director of AILEY as of July 1, 2025. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has performed for an estimated 25 million people in 71 countries on six continents, promoting the uniqueness of the African American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance tradition. In addition to being the Principal Dance Company of New York City Center, where its performances have become a year-end holiday tradition, and its long Auditorium history, the Ailey company performs annually at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, CA, and at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark (where it is the Principal Resident Affiliate), and appears frequently in other major theaters throughout the world during extensive tours. AILEY also includes Ailey II (1974), a second performing company of emerging young dancers and innovative choreographers; The Ailey School (1969), one of the most extensive dance training programs in the world; Ailey Arts In Education & Community Programs (1992), which brings dance into the classrooms, communities, and lives of people of all ages; and Ailey Extension (2005), a program offering dance and fitness classes to the general public, which began with the opening of Ailey's permanent home— the largest building dedicated to dance in New York City, the dance capital of the world— named The Joan Weill Center for Dance, at 55th Street at 9th Avenue in New York City. ABOUT MUSIC THEATER WORKS

Music Theater Works is a resident professional not-for-profit music theater founded in

1980. During its 45-year history it has presented more than 150 productions and intimate presentations. Music Theater Works is a professional theater company whose mission is to present works for the musical stage including historic repertoire, revitalizing the Golden Age of Broadway and earlier works, celebrating the Great American Songbook and introducing modern classics.

Writers Theatre, under the leadership of Executive Director Kathryn M. Lipuma and Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Artistic Director Braden Abraham, continues its 2025/26 Season with Two Sisters and a Pianowritten by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Celebrated Chicago director Lisa Portes joins Writers for the first time to direct. Two Sisters and a Piano will run February 26 – March 29, 2026, in the Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Theatre at 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe. Trapped under house arrest, novelist Maria Celia and her sister Sofia can still hear the rumors of the Russians' departure from Cuba in 1991. While awaiting news from Maria Celia's exiled husband and dreaming of their freedom, the two sisters find their small world unexpectedly shaken by the arrival of a romantic young piano tuner and a charismatic military officer infatuated with Maria Celia's writing. Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz (Anna in the Tropics) weaves an authentic tale of oppression, human spirit, and intertwining fates in a world of shifting global politics.

Tickets are on sale at Writers Theatre at 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe; 847-242-6000; www.writerstheatre.org.

"The particular convergence of firsts in this production is exciting to me," said Artistic Director Braden Abraham. "A major contemporary American writer, Nilo Cruz, and a celebrated long-time Chicago director, Lisa Portes, both making their Writers Theatre debuts. Nilo's plays delight on the page, but they are really sensory experiences meant to be experienced on stage. Two Sisters and a Piano combines the palpable heat of an unlikely romance with the high stakes of a political thriller. Nilo has little interest in debate; instead he's interested in the shape of desire, the cost of repression, and the contradictory forces that shape his characters."

The cast includes Arash Fakhrabadi (Victor Manuel/Understudy Lieutenant Portuondo), Neysha Mendoza Castro (Sofia), Adam Poss (Lieutenant Portuondo), Andrea San Miguel (Maria Celia), Veronica Garrubbo (Understudy Sofia), Richard Gomez (Understudy Militia Guard/Victor Manuel) and Carisa Gonzalez (Understudy Maria Celia).

The stage manager is Katie Klemme and the assistant stage manager is Olivia Leslie.

Invictus Theatre Company, whose summer 2025 production of the two-part epic, ANGELS IN AMERICA, was named top Chicago theatre production of the year and "the best non-Equity production here since before the pandemic" by the CHICAGO TRIBUNE's Chris Jones, has announced programming for its 2026 season. All performances will be at the Windy City Playhouse, 3014 W. Irving Park Road. Consistent with Jones's assertion (in his review of the company's THE HOUSE THAT WILL NOT STAND) that Invictus "is cementing a reputation as the home of epic American drama," the company will continue its tradition of presenting classic and contemporary American plays along with innovative stagings of Shakespeare. Founding Artistic Director Charles Askenaizer announced the company's 2026 season today, which will open with Tennessee Williams's 1955 drama, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. Askenaizer will direct the play, which will open to the press on February 24, 2026; following previews from February 17. It will play through March 29.

Following its success with Tony Kushner's ANGELS IN AMERICA, Invictus will again tap into Kushner's canon with CAROLINE, OR CHANGE – the company's first musical. Kushner penned both book and lyrics for the semi-autobiographical musical. The story was inspired by his childhood growing up as a young Jewish boy in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and his interactions with the Black woman who worked as the family's maid. The music is by Jeanine Tesori, a Tony Award winner for her scores for KIMBERLY AKIMBO and FUN HOME, and a nominee for her scores for CAROLINE, OR CHANGE and THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE. CAROLINE, OR CHANGE will open to the press on June 1, 2026, following previews from May 26; and will play through July 10. The show will be directed by frequent Invictus collaborator, Aaron Reese Boseman.  Creative team to be named. Invictus's production of CAROLINE, OR CHANGE is licensed by Music Theatre International.

In August, Askenaizer will direct Paula Vogel's 2015 drama INDECENT, which recounts the controversy surrounding the 1923 play GOD OF VENGEANCE by Sholem Asch. When GOD OF VENGANCE was produced on Broadway, its producer and cast were arrested and convicted on the grounds of obscenity because the play depicted a Lesbian relationship with an onstage kiss between two women. NEWSDAY's Linda Winer said of INDECENT's 2017 Broadway production, "Has there ever been anything quite like INDECENT, a play that touches — I mean deeply touches — so much rich emotion about history and the theater, anti-Semitism, homophobia, censorship, world wars, red-baiting and, oh, yes, joyful human passion?..." INDECENT will open to the press on August 17, following previews from August 14, and will play through September 22.

The 2026 season will close with Shakespeare's ever-popular story of young love thwarted by hate and prejudice, ROMEO AND JULIET, which will be directed by Louis Contey, a Jeff Award winning Chicago theater veteran. The tragedy, which has enjoyed numerous film adaptations and was updated for the musical WEST SIDE STORY, will open on November 2, 2026, following previews from October 30. It will play through December 13.

Tickets and season subscriptions for the 2026 season are on sale now at www.invictustheatreco.com.

Giordano Dance Chicago (GDC) today announced three world premieres to headline their upcoming April 10 & 11 Harris Theater program. The works are being choreographed by GDC Resident Choreographer and Emmy Award-winning Al Blackstone ("So You Think You Can Dance"); Broadway, Commercial and Stage choreographer Jon Rua; and DanceOne Convention Executive Director and founder of Tapaholics, Mike Minery. GDC takes a leap continuing to push the boundaries of jazz dance influences incorporating tap, urban street, concert and commercial forces. All three new works will be part of two electrifying evening performances showcasing Giordano Dance Chicago's eclectic repertoire.

"The feat of bringing three world premieres to the stage is bold," says GDC Artistic Director Nan Giordano. "Despite the vast diversity in process and style, there underlies a unifying pulse and spirit that is jazz dance. Jazz is a uniquely American dance form that is ever evolving to reflect the contemporary culture. For more than 63 years, we have been a driving force moving the art form forward and are excited to be blending our concert dance company with Broadway, television and the commercial sectors. In the year of America's 250th birthday, there is no better time to be celebrating jazz dance, America's quintessential art form."

GDC returns to the Harris Theater for Music and Dance for its 63rd season with a thrilling program at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11. Among the world premieres is "Dumb Luck!," Blackstone's third work for GDC. Grounded in swing style and infused with contemporary flair, the piece transforms the notion of chance into a joyful celebration. Blackstone, known for his groundbreaking work in musical theater and television's "So You Think You Can Dance," and "Dancing With The Stars" blends technical precision with emotional resonance.

Jon Rua creates his first work for GDC, a full-company piece that fuses jazz and street styles for an urban funk sensibility. A Colombian American performer and creator, Rua is best known for his roles in Broadway hits including original cast of "Hamilton", "In the Heights," as well as his recent choreography for "Floyd Collins" and "Boop! the Musical."

Completing the premieres is a new tap duet by Mike Minery, who will perform alongside dancer Erina Ueda, Dance Magazine's Top 25 to Watch (2024). A 1997 World Tap Champion and Princess Grace Dance Fellowship recipient, Minery brings virtuosic rhythms and his innovative tap voice to his first creation for GDC. The performance is also a rare return to the stage for Minery, whose recent focus has been on dance education through the largest dance convention and competition organization in the world, DanceOne. This further enhances the ongoing collaboration and partnership between GDC & DanceOne.

The program also features audience favorites from GDC's repertoire, including Blackstone's "Sana" (2025), a moving exploration of healing set to an original score by Stahv Danker; "Sabroso" (2011) by Del Dominguez and Laura Flores, a vibrant Latin ballroom showcase praised by the Chicago Tribune; excerpts from Roni Koresh's physically charged "Crossing/Lines" (2016); and Jon Lehrer's high-octane ensemble work with 16 dancers "A Ritual Dynamic" (2007).

The US premiere features Kemi-Bo Jacobs as Agnes and Rory Alexander as William and begins its US premiere at Chicago Shakespeare Theater in The Yard, February 10‑March 8, 2026. The production will then transfer to Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC, from March 17 to April 12, 2026, and American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco from April 22 to May 24, 2026.

Warwickshire, 1582. Agnes Hathaway, a natural healer, meets the Latin tutor, William Shakespeare. Drawn together by powerful but hidden impulses, they create a life together and make a family. When the plague steals 11-year-old Hamnet from his loving parents, they must each confront their loss alone. And yet, out of the greatest suffering, something of extraordinary wonder is born.

The original production of Hamnet played to sold-out audiences in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2023, breaking box office records at the Swan Theatre. It later opened to the biggest box office advance in the Garrick Theatre's history when it transferred to the West End and was hailed as "pure theatre gold" by The Mail on Sunday and "elegant and beguiling" by the Evening Standard.

Kemi-Bo Jacobs plays Agnes. Jacobs' recent stage credits include Coriolanus (National Theatre), The Other Boleyn Girl (Chichester), Ocean at the End of the Lane (West End and National Theatre Tour), All My Sons (Manchester Royal Exchange and UK Tour), Wild East (Young Vic), The Winter's Tale (RSC) and The Sweet Science of Bruising (Southwark Playhouse). Her screen credits include Million Days, The Letter for The King (Netflix), The Great (Hulu), McMafiaThirteen, Delicious, London Has Fallen, The Honorable Woman, Lewis and Doctor Who. Rory Alexander plays William. Alexander can currently be seen starring as a young Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser in the Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood for Starz, and was longlisted for a BIFA for Best Breakthrough Performance for his leading role in Inland opposite Mark Rylance and Kathryn Hunter. He has recently completed filming on Justin Chadwick's latest feature Untamed with Emily Barber and Matthew Steer. Alexander can also be seen playing the role of Boogie in Danny Boyle's Pistol alongside Louis Partridge, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Maisie Williams for FX/Hulu (US) and Disney+(UK). Other notable film and television credits include Element Film's Dark Windows, Dark Game with Ed Westwick, Kenny Swinney in Sky's Then You Run with Leah McNamara, Eric in Amazon's Alex Rider S2 with Vicky McClure, and Netflix's Anxious People.

The cast also includes Troy Alexander (Bartholomew), Nigel Barrett (John/Will Kempe), Haydn Burke (Ensemble), Ajani Cabey (Hamnet), Saffron Dey (Judith), Victoria Elliott (Joan), Heather Forster (Eliza), Thalia Gambe (Ensemble) Karl Haynes (Ned), Ava Hinds Jones (Susanna), Nicki Hobday (Jude), Penny Layden (Mary), Matilda McCarthy (Tilly/Catherina), and Bert Seymour (Burbage/Father John).

"We're delighted to welcome the Royal Shakespeare Company back to Chicago for this moving and illuminating production of Hamnet," shared CST Artistic Director Edward Hall. "The play gives a fascinating window into Shakespeare's life from a new perspective that imagines in such vivid detail what his family might have been like—a valuable new contribution to understanding the family and the writer behind the plays we know and love. And it's wonderful to be welcoming playwright Lolita Chakrabarti back to CST, whose writing so sensitively brings to life the characters in Maggie O'Farrell's beautiful novel."

RSC Co-Artistic Directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey shared, "We are delighted to share casting for the first US tour of Hamnet. It's wonderful to be coming back in 2026 with Lolita Chakrabarti's beautiful adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's best-selling novel, which offers a compelling new perspective on Shakespeare through the eyes of Agnes Hathaway and their children. We can't wait to share this intimate and moving story with US audiences."

Playwright Lolita Chakrabarti added, "Hamnet brings to life the Shakespeare family—William, his sister and their parents, Agnes, his wife, and their three children. You will see why William went to London and discovered the theater, how his family lived without him and how the profound loss of a child gave us one of the most important plays in the western world. Hamnet is a heartwarming and heartbreaking exploration of family, loss, and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive."

Director Erica Whyman said, "I am delighted to be revisiting this extraordinary story for US audiences, and to be making this production with a stellar line-up of performers. Kemi-Bo Jacobs and Rory Alexander are bringing Agnes and William alive on the stage with a luminous intelligence and a profound and shocking understanding of the love and loss that shaped their lives. They are joined by a wonderful company bringing a wealth of experience and spirited invention to Lolita's searing adaptation. The play explores Agnes's remarkable spiritual gifts and her relationship with both the natural world and the future with an imaginative theatricality, and audiences should expect beautiful music, movement and sound design on Tom Piper's stunning set. This is, at its heart, an intimate story of family which finds eternal expression on the stage—to see it in the theatre is to bear witness to the astonishing resilience of the human spirit."

Hamnet has sold over a 1.5 million copies worldwide and was named both Waterstones Book of the Year and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2020. The novel also saw Maggie O'Farrell named the winner of the 2020 Women's Prize for Fiction; the UK's most prestigious annual book award celebrating and honouring fiction written by women. As the No. 1 Sunday Times Bestseller in 2021, Hamnet was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction (2021) and British Book awards 'Fiction Book of the Year' (2021).

The production features set and costume design by Tom Piper, lighting design by Prema Mehta, sound design by Simon Baker, music by Oğuz Kaplangi, casting by Amy  all CDG, and movement by Ayşe Tashkiran.
