Identity's Spring concert offers a captivating performance with two dissimilar works in its dynamic. Join us for the premiere of choreographer Ginny Ching-Yin Lo’s newest work Muted

The program features the return of Enliven, premiered fall 2023, highlighting energy in motion. This East/West fusion dance work will also be performed at the Seattle International Dance Festival (SIDF) this summer. Identity received wonderful reviews from Buzz News and See Chicago Dance of Lo’s Enliven.

In contrast with EnlivenMuted explores the complexity of being muted, muting someone, and telepathic connection. This dance reflects a collective flashback of being muted and/or muting someone.  A powerful piece, this asks us to consider how aggressive and passive outer facade may not reflect the real situation, as communication within relationships connect without a word.

This Spring concert offers two performances only, April 27 at 7:30pm and April 28 at 3pm, both at Visceral Dance Studio. Tickets are easy to book on Eventbrite; walk-ins may be available.

About Identity Performing Arts:

Identity is a not-for-profit organization established in 2016 by founder and artistic director, Ginny Ching-Yin Lo, focused on teaching dance to the underserved community and creating independent dance projects. Lo has performed in the U.S., China, France and Germany with her original works. In 2020 fall Identity expanded beyond teaching and transitioned to a full season professional dance troupe. The company's first live concert debuted in fall, 2021. Since then, Identity has performed locally in Chicago, Evanston, and internationally in Hanover, Germany. Identity was one of the featured companies appearing on WGN Morning News TV for See Chicago Dance Month last summer.  Identity is excited to present Enliven in Seattle International Dance Festival this summer along with companies, globally.  All works created for and performed by Identity dancers express the beauty of our individual identities, interconnected in unity. We invite you as our audience to witness this intention with every dance work.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater announces today a thrilling addition to the season: Tony Award-nominated actor Eddie Izzard brings her celebrated solo theatrical performance of Hamlet to Chicago, direct from a triple-extended New York run at the Orpheum and Greenwich House Theaters and prior to launching a highly anticipated London transfer at Riverside Studios. Izzard portrays 23 characters in William Shakespeare's iconic play in this dynamic new staging adapted by Mark Izzard and directed by Selina Cadell. This strictly limited two-week engagement plays April 19–May 4, 2024 in the Courtyard Theater.

In Hamlet, The King of Denmark is dead, and Prince Hamlet is determined to take revenge—initiating a cascade of events that will destroy both family and state. Izzard portrays men, women, ghosts, scholars, tyrants, courtiers, lovers, fools, and poets.

She says of the monumental undertaking, "I have always gravitated towards playing complex and challenging characters and Hamlet is the ultimate. This is a production for everyone, a timeless drama with an accidental hero. Selina, Mark, and I want audiences to see and hear an accessible, touching, scary, and dramatic Hamlet."

CST Executive Director Kimberly Motes and Artistic Director Edward Hall shared, "After seeing Eddie's extraordinary performance in New York, we are thrilled she's agreed to join us at CST and share her Hamlet with Chicago audiences before London. It's a rare opportunity to see a Hamlet that makes this a play for all of us—truly a play for today."

A Tony Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning actor, Izzard's boundary-pushing career includes critically acclaimed roles in theater, film, and television. On Broadway, Izzard starred in Roundabout Theatre Company's 2003 revival of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, garnering the Tony nomination for Leading Actor in a Play—and appeared in David Mamet's Race. Major London stage credits include The Cryptogram, Edward II, 900 Oneonta, Joe Egg, and Lenny. Izzard made her West End debut in 1993 in the solo show Live at the Ambassadors, receiving an Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement. Izzard's film roles include Stephen Frears' Victoria & Abdul opposite Dame Judi Dench, Julie Taymor's Across the Universe, Peter Bogdanovich's The Cat's Meow, Valkyrie, Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen, and the recent Doctor Jekyll in which she plays Dr. Nina Jekyll and Rachel Hyde. She is the recipient of two Emmy Awards for her televised special, Dressed to Kill. She's also been seen as Dr. Abel Gideon in "Hannibal" and in FX's critically acclaimed series, "The Riches," in which Izzard both starred and executive produced.

In 2022, Izzard performed a solo adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations—also created in collaboration with Mark Izzard and Selina Cadell—which played to rave reviews and sold-out audiences in New York and in London's West End. The creative team reunites for Hamlet, which features set design by Tom Piper, lighting by Tyler Elich, costume styled by Tom Piper and Libby DaCosta, composer Eliza Thompson, movement director Didi Hopkins, and fight director J. Allen Suddeth. It is produced by Westbeth Entertainment, Mick Perrin Worldwide, and John Gore.

TimeLine Theatre announces the world premiere of the latest play developed through the company’s Playwrights Collective—Black Sunday, by Chicago playwright Dolores Díaz, a startling look at conflicts of climate change, race, and gender in the days leading up to one of the worst dust storms in American history. Sandra Marquez makes her TimeLine directorial debut with Black Sunday, running May 8 – June 29, 2024. Press opening is Wednesday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Black Sunday also marks the bookend to a chapter of TimeLine Theatre’s growth. After 25 amazing years at the company’s longtime home at 615 W. Wellington Avenue in Chicago’s Lakeview East neighborhood, Black Sunday will be the final production presented in that space, leading toward the company’s exciting new era.

Last month, TimeLine announced plans for a thrilling 28th season, including producing partnerships with three of Chicago’s preeminent performing arts organizations in 2024-25, as a bridge toward opening its future home at 5035 N. Broadway Avenue in Uptown.

BLACK SUNDAY: A WAKE-UP CALL FOR THE WORLD IN THE 1930s … AND TODAY

Step back to April 1935 in the dust storm-riddled plains of Texas, where a family is struggling to keep their farm afloat amidst a mounting series of environmental disasters. As Jesús, a new field worker, arrives in their midst, stubborn Pa refuses to believe his land is no longer viable, young Sunny dreams of a new life in bountiful California, and Ma starts having mysterious visions of the future. It’s a startling look at conflicts surrounding climate change, race, and gender in the days leading up to an infamous dust storm known as Black Sunday.

Black Sunday is the fourth world premiere play developed through TimeLine Theatre’s Playwrights Collective, the same new play program that brought forth TimeLine’s debut productions of Tyla Abercrumbie’s Relentless (Jeff Award, Outstanding New Work), Will Allan’s Campaigns, Inc. and Brett Neveu’s To Catch a Fish. The Collective was launched in 2013 to support Chicago-based playwrights in residence and create new work centered on TimeLine’s mission.

The cast of Black Sunday features TimeLine Company Members Mechelle Moe (she/her) as Ma and David Parkes (he/him) as Pa, with Christopher Alvarenga (he/him) as Jésus, Vic Kuligoski (he/him) as Jim, and Angela Morris (she/her) as Sunny.

The Black Sunday production team includes Joe Schermoly (Scenic Designer, he/him), Christine Pascual (Costume Designer, she/her), Conchita Avitia (Lighting Designer, she/her/ella), Saskia Baker (Properties Designer, she/her), Anthony Churchill (Projections Designer, he/him), Forrest Gregor (Sound Designer, he/him), Kristina Fluty (Intimacy Director, she/her), J. Isabel Salazar (Literary Dramaturg, they/them), Bryar Barborka (Production Dramaturg, they/them), Dina Spoerl (Dramaturgical Display Designer, she/her), and Alden Vasquez (Stage Manager, he/him). Understudies are Connor Green (Jim, he/him), Christopher Hainsworth (Pa, he/him), Lauren Grace Thompson (Sunny, she/her), Richie Villafuerte (Jésus, he/him), and India Whiteside (Ma, she/her).

Black Sunday embodies TimeLine’s mission—illuminating aspects of history often untold, while drawing haunting parallels to critical issues of today,” said TimeLine Artistic Director PJ Powers. “As part of TimeLine’s Playwrights Collective, Dolores has demonstrated evocative storytelling, fierce intellect, and propensity for collaboration. Black Sunday is the fourth world premiere to emerge from the Playwright’s Collective, and I’m confident it will make as notable an impact as the acclaimed plays which preceded it. Witnessing the play’s evolution the past four years, I’ve seen Dolores’ indefatigable passion, and we’re thrilled to pair her with the remarkable director Sandra Marquez whose career, including work as an educator and actor, has distinguished her among Chicago’s most notable leaders.”

The Joffrey Ballet boldly closes its 2023-24 season with the return of Midsummer Night's Dream by internationally renowned Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman. Premiered by The Joffrey Ballet to North American audiences in 2018 with critical acclaim, Ekman's Midsummer Night's Dream is a mind-bending trip to a surreal realm of unearthly delights. Far from a Shakespearean tale, this fully immersive theatrical experience pays homage to the summer solstice and the Scandinavian Midsummer holiday—a time of uproarious celebration, mystery, adventure, and love. Midsummer Night's Dream is presented in 10 performances only at the historic Lyric Opera House, 20 North Upper Wacker Drive, from April 25-May 5, 2024.

"Alexander Ekman dares to be bold with Midsummer Night's Dream, creating an astonishing dance/theater performance of tremendous theatricality and scale," said The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE. "Playing to the strengths of Joffrey Company Artists to convey the evolution of our art form, woven together with the trailblazing talents of Ekman's creative team, Midsummer gifts audiences with an unforgettable experience to end our 2023-24 season."

"The Joffrey Ballet's premiere of Ekman's Midsummer Night's Dream in 2018 reverberated throughout Chicago long after the curtains closed," says Greg Cameron, President and CEO of The Joffrey Ballet. "Bringing to life our founder Robert Joffrey's vision to embrace the new and the bold, Midsummer awakens our appreciation for the arts and its power to feed energy into our lives, and the great creative spirit of Chicago."

Midsummer features a commissioned score by Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson, who has partnered with Ekman on several major works, including his popular contemporary work Tulle, which received its US premiere by The Joffrey Ballet in 2015Swedish indie rock sensation Anna von Hausswolff will also join the Joffrey dancers on-stage to perform three songs for Ekman's Midsummer Night's Dream, live at every performance. Von Hausswolff is best known for pushing the limits of metal, experimental pop, and progressive rock.

A production in two acts with costumes by Bregje van Balen (former dancer with Nederlands Dance Theatre) and original set/lighting designs by Linus Fellbom (credited with more than 200 productions, including the world tour for Swedish rock band Refused), Midsummer Night's Dream made its world premiere with The Royal Swedish Ballet in 2015 and is widely considered Ekman's wildest and most daring production. Ekman's ode to the longest day of the year follows a traditional Midsummer festival—from a passionate, lively celebration by day to a whirlwind dream by night. Ekman's picturesque fusion of classical and contemporary ballet blurs the line between the real and the imagined, making audiences wonder, was it all just a dream?

Celebrated around the globe for his cutting-edge creativity, Ekman has collaborated with companies worldwide to create award-winning works that both entertain and challenge the observer. Midsummer Night's Dream will be the fourth work by Ekman that The Joffrey Ballet has performed; past productions include his critically acclaimed Joy (April 2017) and Tulle in 2015, along with the wild and rhythmic Episode 31.

Midsummer Night's Dream features live music performed by the Lyric Opera Orchestra, conducted by Scott Speck, Music Director of The Joffrey Ballet.

Writers Theatre 2024/25 Season includes:

Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812

Written by Dave Malloy

Directed & Choreographed by Katie Spelman

Music Direction by Matt Deitchman

September 5 – October 27, 2024

Opening: Friday, September 13, 2024

"There's a war going on somewhere out there, and Andrey isn't here." Young and impulsive, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancée from the front lines. But when she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, family friend Pierre must push through his existential crisis to help Natasha pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. Based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy's epic novel War and Peace, this innovative musical spectacle took Broadway by storm with its "electropop opera" score, earning 12 Tony Award nominations. Katie Spelman and Matt Deitchman, the inspired creative team behind WT's hit production of Once, reunite to bring this modern spin on a literary classic to Chicago for the first time.

Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com

Every Brilliant Thing

Written by Duncan Macmillan

With Jonny Donahoe

Directed by Kimberly Senior

October 31, 2024 – January 5, 2025

Opening: Friday, November 8. 2024

"1. Ice Cream. 2. Water fights. 3. Staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV." This is how a six-year-old child begins a list of all the things that make life wonderful. They're making the list for their mother, who suffers from depression. As life goes on, and the challenges faced morph from childhood to adulthood, the list continues to grow and take on a life of its own. By shining a hilarious and compassionate light on life's small abundant joys, this big-hearted play—told in gentle collaboration with the audience—is a loving tribute to resilience and the lengths we will go to for those we love.

Frida...A Self Portrait

Written and Performed by Vanessa Severo

Directed by Joanie Schultz

January 23 – February 23, 2025

Opening: Friday, January 31, 2025

Iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was a woman who lived boldly, loved wildly, and painted prolifically in order to see herself and the world around her more clearly. Witness this extraordinary figure come to life onstage through playwright and performer Vanessa Severo, who brings breathtaking physicality and raw honesty to this stunningly creative production. With music and movement, Vanessa cracks open a powerful portal between herself and Frida, uncovering insights into the painter's physical limitations, complex love life, addictions, and, of course, the beauty in her art.

April 3 – May 4, 2025

Friday, April 11, 2025

Life in County Donegal, Ireland proceeds much the same in 1833 as it's always done. Irish-speaking young people gather at the local hedge school where the long-time and long-winded schoolmaster instructs them in lessons in Latin and Ancient Greek. This bucolic tranquility is shattered when the schoolmaster's son arrives home along with members of the British army on an assignment to map the country, draw new borders, and "standardize" local place names into the King's English. Soon, this quiet corner of the emerald isle is ablaze with political, cultural and personal tension. A powerful classic from one of Ireland's most revered dramatists, Translations is a celebration of the power of language—whether it be to kindle romance, incite violence, or build a bridge to a common understanding.

Translations is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

The World Premiere of

Dhaba on Devon Avenue

Written by Madhuri Shekar

Directed by Chay Yew

In a co-production with TimeLine Theatre Company

June 19 – July 27, 2025

Opening: Friday, June 27, 2025

Dhaba Canteen has been a stalwart institution on Chicago's Devon Avenue since the '60s, serving up delicious Sindhi food with the power to transport diners back to the halcyon days of undivided India. Times are changing, however. With the bank threatening foreclosure and Chef Neeraj's health in decline, the restaurant may soon be cooking up its last meal—unless sous chef Rita can convince her father to let her take over the kitchen. Rich with culinary tradition and dramatic twists, Dhaba on Devon Avenue serves up a searing Chicago-set story of family, legacy, and survival at all costs.
