From the Mouths of BabesThis past Thursday, my cousin invited to see a band play at Goose Island on Clybourn. From the Mouth of Babes was the name of the band. “Sounds fun” I said. As a drummer, I am always open to seeing bands and having a few drinks.

The Misfits at Chicago's House of Blues

The MisfitsSubwoofers were kicking out some serious air through the crowd of standing room only under 30’s. Interesting hair styles and leather studded everything was the classic look for the evening. The Misfits took the stage at the House of Blues opening with a sample of the theme to the movie Halloween and then proceeded to play their single by the same name. It was like watching a horror film that was set to demonic music.

800px-Fleetfoxes08The Fleet Foxes have changed. Last summer they were good live, but they were timid and withdrawn. Saturday night at the Metro was a different band playing the same songs and a few more. A year on the road has taught the Foxes how to have confidence, and that folk songs can rock.

Opening for the Fleet Foxes was Dungen from Sweden, a psychedelic-folk-rock band who seemed surprised by the overwhelmingly positive response from the audience. They said, “You guys are here to see the Fleet Foxes, right?” before beginning their encore.

David ByrneI've been a Talking Heads fan since I was 13, and I've seen Byrne perform four times before, but nothing to top last night's show, which featured a huge number of performers -- three backup singers, three dancers, two percussionists, various guitar players, a keyboard, a bass -- and the sweetest, goofiest, most lovely choreography since Stop Making Sense...

Phish crowdCounting Crows at Taste of Chicago (06/27/09)--Going to this show was a very last-minute decision.  I had seen the Crows once before and was very disappointed.  I went this time because it was free and I was sure they couldn’t be much worse than last time.  They were NOT worse at all.  In fact, they were actually good...

flaming-lips-ballI retrieved the rum from its hiding place feeling like a teenager sneaking booze into a friends house. The lack of searching at the gate further revealed itself in copious cloudsmokes of reefer, which created an almost constant scent in the crowds. Oh, and the following are some additional details on selected artists and occurrences from Pitchfork on Sunday July 19th.

Green Day Rocks Chicago

img_5761This was my second time seeing Green Day in concert, and they blew my mind just as much as the first time I saw them live; these guys can ROCK! Billie, Mike, and Tre have great chemistry together as a band and it manifests itself in spades onstage. If you looked up "stage presence" in the dictionary you might find a picture of Billie Joe Armstrong there...

Chris IsaakChris Isaak is now touring with, “Mr. Lucky”, his first new studio album in seven years and for old fans and new, it is a summer tour not to be missed. Chris has been with his band for 25 years but from the high level of energy and musicianship they still put out you’d swear it was just yesterday you witnessed Chris Isaak big breakout hit “Wicked Game”.

DeYoungWarm breezes crossed the stage, the subwoofers were thumping, and the area in front of the stage was packed. The guitars were loud, the vocals on pitch, and the rhythm section was in perfect time.

"Up" at Steppenwolf

Up at Steppenwolf with Ian BarfordDo you have a dream? The kind of dream that makes your whole family both respect your audacity and think you are crazy at the same time? The kind of dream that may take decades to fulfill, while quite possibly bankrupting your life savings?
